Two-phase orthodontic treatment

In cases of obvious hypoplasia of the upper or lower jaw the orthodontic treatment for kids is provided in two phases. Such occlusal abnormality has an effect on the child’s face. In the childhood, it is possible to normalize grows and the development of the jaws with the help of the orthodontic appliances. Two-phase orthodontic treatment allows avoiding of the permanent tooth extraction or jaw surgery in the mature age.

Two phases of treatment have been specially devised for the two age periods and aimed to solve the problems in such age when the orthodontic treatment is the most effective. The first phase is favorable for the jaws growth and aesthetics of the face in early period (from 7 to 11 years). During the second phase when permanent teething is actually finished (12-14 years), there has to be carried out the final aligning and normalization of the teeth positioning to achieve the perfect and healthy smile.

The orthodontic treatment, provided during the active growth period, may lower the possibility of permanent teeth extraction if there is a space deficit in the dentition. Moreover it can prevent the jaw surgery for the bite normalization in the adulthood.

First phase treatment (7-12 years)

The goal of first phase treatment is to normalize the jaw growth and size in order to accommodate all the permanent teeth and to relate the upper and lower jaws to each other. Sometimes, the parents, by their own, notice the early signs of jaw problems as they grow and develop. The problems can be observed on an upper and lower jaw that is growing too much or not enough.

В In case if a child has this jaw discrepancy it is necessary to start the orthodontic treatment, at the period of second dentition, without waiting for all permanent teeth eruption. Exactly during this period the active growth of dentition system (this period begins a little bit earlier than active baby growth as a whole) takes place. With the help of orthodontic treatment this process can be controlled – to normalize the size of the jaws, to stimulate or to hold their uncorrected growing. For this purpose we use the removable and fixed orthodontic appliances, which are individually chosen in every particular case. The active period of treatment lasts for 12- 14 months. The orthodontist regularly monitors the ongoing changes and the permanent teeth eruption.

Second phase treatment (12-14 years)

The goal of the second phase treatment is to achieve fool equilibrium of teeth and final normalization of bite. During this period of treatment braces are required for an average of 24 months. After the braces removal, the retainers are worn for the fixation of the achieved result and to ensure the beautiful smile has retained.

Clinical cases:
1)Mesioclusion, size reduction of the upper jaw
2)Mesioclusion, insufficient development of the upper jaw.

3) Distal occlusion, reduction of size of the lower jaw.

4) Distal occlusion, insufficient development of the lower jaw
